Отряды пехоты, кавалерии и артиллерии под командованием генерала Крука [ Crook, George] напали на лагерь шайеннов [ Cheyenne] во главе с вождем Тупой Нож. Крук разыскивал индейцев оглала [ Oglala] под предводительством Неистового Коня [ Crazy Horse] для отмщения за разгром генерала Кастера в битве на р. Литл-Бигхорн [ Little Bighorn, Battle of the] и нападал на всех встречавшихся индейцев. Он застал шайеннов врасплох рано утром, многие из них погибли, шайенны лишились также почти всех лошадей, и многие отступали босиком по снегу
